Dogfish Head Hellhound on my Ale – Day 62

hellhound-on-my-ale-label

Dogfish Head brews unique beers.  In fact, their motto says it all; “Off-centered ales for off-centered people.”  Sam Calagione, the Founder and President of Dogfish Head has been brewing crazy creations since 1995.

This is how far I got…and then the Dogfish Head website decided not to work.  Or at least work as quickly as when Dial-Up was all the rage.  And that was it for me and my 365 days.  I was all prepared to write about Robert Johnson and how he sold his soul to the devil in order to play the blues.  And the unique Dogfish flavors,…

Firestone Walker Wookey Jack – Day 50

Firestone-Wookey-Jack

Today is National Talk Like a Pirate Day!  If you are interested in playing, even though it is almost over, there are tons of fun things to do and see at www.talklikeapirate.com.  This morning, I found out my pirate name and my pirate ship’s name.  You can refer to me from henceforth as Captain Grace Rackham of Poseidon’s Barnacle.  It is also National Women Road Warrior Day (I’m not really sure what this means) and Saint Christopher and Nevis’s Independence Day (Congratulations to them!).

It seems like there are holidays for everything these days.  And the two websites provided…

Great Lakes Brewing Nosferatu – Day 48

Nosferatu beer label

I know it is a little early to be thinking about Halloween, but this year some of my friends are considering dressing up as beer labels.  On one hand, I think this is a fabulous and fun idea.  On the other hand, there aren’t a lot of women on beer bottles who aren’t slightly to majorly inappropriate.  This means that I will either have to dress in a scantily clad outfit, which my body is not prepared for or I will have to dress as a character that isn’t female.  I haven’t decided what I am going to…

Old Schoolhouse Ruud Awakening IPA – Day 30

ruddawakening_med

Today, I dealt with hungry children.  There is nothing as sad as seeing kids who don’t have enough to eat.

While waivers are being applied for and families are waiting on confirmation for free or reduced lunch costs based on income, children are coming to school without lunch.  The cafeteria is telling these kids they can’t charge anymore once they reach a certain limit.  Then what?  After that they are told to bring in money or pack.  Well, they obviously don’t have money or they wouldn’t be applying for a waiver.  And they clearly don’t have food at home or parents would…

Eagle Rock Populist – Day 22

populist

As a woman who loves beer and wants other women to also enjoy beer, I love what Eagle Rock Brewery is doing. In 2009, a husband, wife, and father team opened up Eagle Rock in Los Angeles.  Ting Su, the co-founder has since started a woman’s forum that meets monthly to drink and talk about beer.  I was excited to read about this aspect of the brewery.  Craft beer is a booming industry and women need to be involved.  I wish I lived near LA to be a part of this forum on a monthly basis.  If you live near LA,…

Founders Devil Dancer – Day 20

devil dancer1

Devil Dancer is a Triple IPA.  What does that mean in layman’s terms?  This beer will blow you away from all sides.  A 12% ABV beer with 112 IBUs.  Need I say more?

Founders Devil Dancer

Over a year ago, I tried this beer for the first time.  I only had two words to describe the taste…”liquid marijuana.”  The massive hoppy bite and the huge malt presence just seem to taste that way to me.  Not that I’ve ever had liquid marijuana, nor that it even exists.  I’m just guessing. It smells as if you just pulled the hops…

Stone 16th Anniversary Ale – Day 18

Stone-16th-Anniversary-IPA-570x690

Many breweries have anniversary ales.  Weyerbacher just released its Seventeen, Firestone Walker will be releasing it’s XVI at the Great American Beer Festival, and Ithaca Excelsior! Fourteen came out in April.  Those are just a few of the many. Some breweries began making anniversary beers at a significant date, such as their 10th anniversary.  Others have been making it since they opened, or pretty darn close.

Stone began making anniversary ales for their 2nd anniversary. There isn’t a single review available for the 2nd anniversary ale (that I could find anyway).  The only reason I know it exists is because it…

Super India Pale Ale Collaboration – Day 17

super ipa

Collaboration beers are an interesting thing.  They can be created in a variety of ways.  Sometimes recipes are shared/developed between breweries and the resulting beer is brewed at each location, thus making a slightly different taste depending on where it was brewed.  Saison du Buff is one example of this kind of collaboration. Victory, Stone, and Dogfish Head all brewed this beer at their own facilities.  I haven’t tried this year’s version yet, but Dogfish Head was the best out of the 3 last year.  Then there are beers that are created in one brewery but have been made with the assistance…

SanTan Brewing Devil’s Ale

San Tan Brewing Logo

One of the great things about having family that lives out of town is traveling and trying as many new beers as you can.  We are lucky in Ohio that a ton of breweries distribute here, but not all of them.  My parents live in Arizona so my husband and I go visit every year.  We make a point to visit all of the bigger breweries and even some smaller ones.  We also stop at some of the larger better beer stores and the ones that are off the beaten path.  We usually end up coming back to Ohio with…

Three Floyds Apocalypse Cow – Day 15

Three-Floyds-Apocalypse-Cow-Double-IPA-e1330805078916-200x200

Today I am drinking an Apocalypse Cow.  Why?  Because it is in my fridge.  And because it was brewed in June, it has probably sat around long enough.  I don’t really have anything to write about tonight.  Which is good for both the reader and the writer.

Although I did just watch the idiotic air guitar guy on America’s Got Talent.  How stupid was that?

Three Floyds Apocalypse Cow

Apocalypse Cow is a seasonal release by Three Floyds.  This DIPA has a major fruity and flowery aroma when fresh.  3 Floyds did a great job mellowing out the 100 IBUs with…
