Hangar 24 Chocolate Porter – Day 33

It never ceases to amaze me how there are kids in this world who are spoiled beyond belief.  A 6 year old’s birthday party is a great place to view this spectacle.  My niece was opening her gifts today in front of the family as always.  When she received a present filled with clothing, each item was efficiently jettisoned to the floor without even being unfolded or looked at to determine what type of attire it actually was.  She did all this with a smile.  Gifts with toys were given a bit more attention.  But that wasn’t what leads me to use the…

Brouwerij de Molen Kopi Loewak – Day 32

When I passed this beer on the shelf at one of our favorite beer stores/bars yesterday, I recognized the name and thought that someone had recommended this beer.  I couldn’t remember why I recognized the name or who had suggested it, but I picked up the bottle and had them chill it anyway.  I asked Steve if he had heard of the beer and/or who recommended it to us, but he looked at me like I was nuts.  An hour or so later, another friend showed up and reminded me that Kopi Luwak was the name of the coffee that Jack Nicholson drank…

Hair of the Dog Fred – Day 31

Tonight, we went to the Indians game.  I know that they are terrible, but it is still fun to sit outside on a gorgeous night and enjoy a game of baseball.  As part of our shared season ticket package, of which we have 5 games, we get to watch one game in a suite each year.  Tonight was that night.

In the fifth inning or so, a pop fly was headed for the suite next to us.  The guy standing nearest to the rail held up his hand as if to catch the ball.  At the last second,…

Old Schoolhouse Ruud Awakening IPA – Day 30

Today, I dealt with hungry children.  There is nothing as sad as seeing kids who don’t have enough to eat.

While waivers are being applied for and families are waiting on confirmation for free or reduced lunch costs based on income, children are coming to school without lunch.  The cafeteria is telling these kids they can’t charge anymore once they reach a certain limit.  Then what?  After that they are told to bring in money or pack.  Well, they obviously don’t have money or they wouldn’t be applying for a waiver.  And they clearly don’t have food at home or parents would…

Crabtree Peachtree Cezanne Saison – Day 29

Sometimes, no matter how hard you search, there is no information available on the internet.  This beer falls into that category.  On the  Crabtree website, the only Cezanne series beer with information is their Orange Blossom.  There are no ratings of a Peachtree Saison on Beer Advocate.  Rate Beer has 5 ratings, but I’m not sure which version any of them sampled, as it isn’t listed.  When I searched for images, the only images that are found are for the Peachtree aged in Zinfandel barrels.  Our bottle was aged in Pinot Noir barrels according to the label.  Actually, the label states…

Epic Fermentation Without Representation – Day 28

As I was driving home today, the weather was gorgeous.  The sun was out, the sky was that deep blue that only comes in autumn.  The wind was blowing and the temperature was a perfect mid-70′s.  I was craving a pumpkin beer.

And while I thought this beer should be saved until Constitution Day, September 17, it was the sole pumpkin choice in the refrigerator.  So after I mowed the lawn, which took forever since it was way too long and way too wet and kept clogging up the mower.  And after I went for a run, we cracked open…

Maui Brewing Coconut Porter – Day 27

Today was the kids’ first day of school.  I ran around meeting new kids, giving expectation speeches, and dealing with an unplanned indoor recess due to rain.  Plus everything else that arises on a first day of school; discipline, peanut allergies, lunch duties, etc.  I don’t think I sat for more than 10 minutes in a row between 8:00 and 4:00.  My feet hurt.

Drinking a beer was easy today.  I wanted one really badly at 10:00 AM and have needed one every waking moment since.  However, I also need sleep.  As soon as I am done writing this, I…

Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin Ale – Day 26

Pumpkin ales seem to be quite the controversy these days.  Clearly, as breweries release their pumpkin beers earlier and earlier in the fall and even the summer, it is obvious to the consumer that real pumpkin isn’t actually being used.  In fact, canned pumpkin is used in many pumpkin beers in order to distribute them during the fall season.

The question is, whose fault is this?  This question is close to, “what came first, the chicken or the egg?”  Is it the distributor’s fault for pushing the brewer to make beer early so they can be the first on the…

Jackie O’s Dynamo Hum – Day 25

dynamo hum

I’ve been wanting to write this post for a while, but knew I would need a day where I had a decent amount of time for research.  If you just want to read the review, you will need to scroll for a while.  Sorry about that.  Today, I want to talk about beer names.  I love when beer names are puns.  Often I make Steve buy me beer just because I giggle when I read the title.  I don’t even necessarily care what kind of beer it is or what the reviews say.  The name makes me laugh, so I…

Great Lakes Oktoberfest – Day 24

Last night Steve and I went to a new event at our local zoo.  The Cleveland Zoological Society instituted a Date Night at the Zoovies soiree.  A ticket provided the customer with unlimited beer and wine, appetizers, and a movie on the big screen in one of the Amphitheaters.

Two of the zoo areas were open and a few animals were out and moving.  Actually, the weather was really conducive to animal movement.  The lion was walking around, making chuffing noises.  The rhinos (mom and baby) were playing and chasing geese that had found their way into the enclosure, and the kangaroos…
