Fat Head’s Bumbleberry – Day 53

Bumble-Berry-Label-e1342366685550-200x200

Theme bars and restaurants seem to me to be popping up everywhere lately.  I know that this isn’t a new concept and some theme locations have managed to pull off their themes with huge success – take the Hard Rock Cafe, with locations world-wide.  But I think there has been some major reaching lately, at least in Cleveland.  Some themes have found success and others; we will have to wait and see.

Yesterday, we went with some friends to a new brewery/bar downtown.  The theme of this bar is bicycles and local beer.  We’ve been hearing some mixed reviews.  People in…

Abita Pecan Harvest Ale – Day 52

250AbitaPecan

Okay, so I ordered this beer knowing full well that it probably wasn’t going to blow me away in terms of flavor, but I was hoping that it might surprise me.  Abita makes a full line of beers, but the only one I have ever seen on the shelves or at a bar is Purple Haze.  Purple Haze is not a bad beer for anyone who is just getting into craft beer.  It is a raspberry wheat, so there isn’t really any hop presence, it is relatively light,  is low in alcohol (4.2%),  and has the sweet carbonation flavor of…

Figueroa Mountain Brewing Stagecoach Stout – Day 51

Beer Trading is an interesting phenomenon to me.  There are different types of trading.  There is the single trade, wherein I have a beer that you want and you have a beer that I want, so we arrange a trade.  We may never trade again and we probably don’t know each other.  There are arranged trades.  While this isn’t the norm, this summer my friends were part of the Beer It Forward Beer Advocate trade.  We provided regional beers to a group in Buffalo, and a group in California sent us beers from their region.  We didn’t meet them and will…

Firestone Walker Wookey Jack – Day 50

Firestone-Wookey-Jack

Today is National Talk Like a Pirate Day!  If you are interested in playing, even though it is almost over, there are tons of fun things to do and see at www.talklikeapirate.com.  This morning, I found out my pirate name and my pirate ship’s name.  You can refer to me from henceforth as Captain Grace Rackham of Poseidon’s Barnacle.  It is also National Women Road Warrior Day (I’m not really sure what this means) and Saint Christopher and Nevis’s Independence Day (Congratulations to them!).

It seems like there are holidays for everything these days.  And the two websites provided…

Founders Breakfast Stout – Day 49

breakfast-stout

Anyone who ages/cellars beers know that there are certain rules that theoretically should apply:

  • Many styles of beer should not be aged.  Other styles are great for aging.
  • The beer should become smoother and less boozy.
  • The flavor of the beer should become more complex.

We were excited to pop open a Breakfast Stout from 2012 and compare it to a 2011 which we had stored in our cellar.  Let’s go through our theories:

Many styles of beer should not be aged.  Other styles are great for aging.

Stouts are a good choice for aging, usually.   We…

Great Lakes Brewing Nosferatu – Day 48

Nosferatu beer label

I know it is a little early to be thinking about Halloween, but this year some of my friends are considering dressing up as beer labels.  On one hand, I think this is a fabulous and fun idea.  On the other hand, there aren’t a lot of women on beer bottles who aren’t slightly to majorly inappropriate.  This means that I will either have to dress in a scantily clad outfit, which my body is not prepared for or I will have to dress as a character that isn’t female.  I haven’t decided what I am going to…

Perennial Fantastic Voyage – Day 47

fantastic voyage

The kitchen…it always becomes the central hang-out during parties or get togethers.  It doesn’t matter how large or small the space, how many people are present, or even how much seating (or lack of seating) is available.  I know that food is probably the greatest motivation for hanging out in the kitchen. But I think another lesser considered reason is the volume level of other rooms.  The living room, for example, always seems to have either something on TV or music playing.  The kitchen allows the game (or whatever is on) to be occasionally glimpsed and music to be overheard, but the focus remains…

Darwin Original Flag Porter – Day 46

flag porter

Trying new things can be scary.  This is especially true when you are paying for it and will not be able to return it, if in fact it does not live up to your standards.  However, sometimes trying new things can bring great rewards.

Yesterday we went out to dinner with the other Hop Bunny and her husband for her birthday dinner.  The beer on the menu was adequate, and actually better than I had hoped for, but much of what was listed were beers that I had sampled in the past.  One of the beers though was from a brewery that I had never even

The Bruery Autumn Maple – Day 45

bruery-autumn-maple

Yesterday, we had one of my favorite fall weather beers.  Autumn Maple by the Bruery is a delicious beer.  And unlike some other autumn beers which use pumpkins in their brewing process, the Bruery uses yams.

The word “yam” makes me giggle.  I don’t know why, it just seems like a funny word.  So randomly, my friends and I started creating “yam” songs and “yam” places.  Here are some of our favorites (after spending a good hour or more of carefully crafting yammy goodness).  Yes, we spent almost the entire night laughing about yams.  Every time we dropped it for a bit, yams just crept…

Ommegang Scythe and Sickle – Day 44

lScytheSickleLabel

First of all, I would like to apologize to my husband for pronouncing the word “scythe” wrong and then telling him that he was incorrect in his pronunciation.  Sorry, babe.

Secondly, I hate late night meetings.  It seems that so far this year, I have been home late at least twice each week.  By late, I mean 8:00 or later.  That’s the worst.  I don’t get my exercise in, so I’m crabby.  I am so tired when I get home that I lay on the couch and tend to fall asleep rather quickly.  Plus, I’m usually starving, although I really don’t…
