I need a Marcel! If I had one, he would sit in my living room on the TV stand and make me smile every day. It’s the little things in life that make me happy.
Marcel is the gnome mascot for Brasserie d’Achouffe, hereafter referred to as Chouffe. This brewery in Belgium has been in operation since 1982. Legend has it that gnomes used to brew beer in Belgium until they shared their recipe with the Chouffe brewers. There are different stories surrounding how that came to pass depending on where you look, but this brewery definitely pays homage to the gnome. Marcel is the gnome who graces the label of Chouffe’s flagship beer, La Chouffe. There are gnomes on each label. Some are wearing different colored pants, but the red hat is always present on every gnome.
In early September, a large gnome statue was stolen from nearby the Chouffe brewery. I’m not really sure how this feat could be pulled off. This gnome was 6 feet tall and over 400 pounds. I feel like if I was driving down the street and saw a huge Marcel in the bed of a pick-up truck it would be something I wouldn’t forget. But I don’t need a 400 pound Marcel. I just need a small one. The one that I would most like is about a foot high. There are tinier versions though, that probably come in at around 4 inches. I’d even be happy with one of those.
This is a nice, refreshing beer. It is bright and crisp without a lot of Belgian funkiness. There is a lasting earthiness that doesn’t overpower the palate, but instead adds a clean flavor to the end. This was a great way to start my Sunday morning. I really didn’t feel like drinking at all today, but I needed a new beer to review for the day. This one woke me up and tasted great at the same time. And it paired really well with my spicy braised beef hash. As this beer is often on tap at our local Sunday morning brunch bar, I am sure that I will be enjoying it again.
