Today was the kids’ first day of school. I ran around meeting new kids, giving expectation speeches, and dealing with an unplanned indoor recess due to rain. Plus everything else that arises on a first day of school; discipline, peanut allergies, lunch duties, etc. I don’t think I sat for more than 10 minutes in a row between 8:00 and 4:00. My feet hurt.
Drinking a beer was easy today. I wanted one really badly at 10:00 AM and have needed one every waking moment since. However, I also need sleep. As soon as I am done writing this, I am going to lay down and will probably be asleep for the night around 8:00. I may not even make it upstairs and just sleep on the couch. We shall see.
I will start by saying that this is a pretty good porter. There is a deep chocolate and toasty malt flavor that lingers for quite a while. The beer is thin enough to qualify as a porter, but has the flavor of a stout. What I don’t really taste is the coconut. I’m trying. I let it warm. That didn’t bring it out. I closed my eyes and really tried to taste it, and I just don’t. The toastiness and other flavors don’t allow any sweetness or coconut to come through. I’m not complaining though. This is a really good beer with a lot of flavor. And while I enjoy coconut, there are a lot of people I know who don’t. I had Steve take a sip and he couldn’t discern any coconut either. As a coconut hater, that means that for those who don’t like coconut, they shouldn’t immediately pass on this beer. If you get out to Maui or find a place that stocks Maui Brewing, which will mostly be the west coast, I recommend trying it. If you like porters, you will enjoy this beer.
